Interesting Details:

We had questions on updates to Windows computers. Some members weren’t getting updates on a timely basis. The suggestions were to make updates automatic in the settings. For those who turn their computers off each night and have problems with updates, to be sure to leave the computer on all night once a week to receive timely updates.

For those members who leave their computers on all the time, the suggestion was to turn their computer off once a week to help clean out temp files & etc. This suggestion also applies to cell phones.

We had a number of questions on backing up computers. Many have noticed the rise of ransomware. It is malware that encrypts (locks up) all your files and demands money to unlock them. The ONLY defense against ransomware is to be backing your data up on a regular basis. Depending on the amount of data you have to back up, backups can be made to flash drives, external hard drives, or to ‘cloud’ backup services like Carbonite. Cloud services are simply other computers out on the internet. True backup services rigorously backup, encrypt and protect their customer’s data. Some ‘cloud storage’ services are different. Be sure to read all information carefully as some services limit what content can be backed up.Carbonite, for example does not backup video. Also avoid services that simply synchronize your data between your device and cloud storage. You want a true backup service.

Jerry Timen wrote in a question about backup and changing from Win 7 to Win 10. The issue seemed to be that he was running out of room. It’s best to keep only 2 or 3 of your most recent backups. There’s no need to keep more different backups than that. After you accumulate 2 or 3, delete the oldest backup each time you add a backup to your storage.

For password questions the best advice is to select a reputable password manager. Take the time to do your research, install it correctly and learn to use it. The peace of mind is well worth the effort. Penny Noriega has been offering a ‘Last Pass’ password manager class regularly. Check the Ollie catalog.

Myron Thorner mentioned System Information Windows .SIW is a system information tool that gathers detailed information about your system properties and settings. It’s a standalone tool that does not require installation and allows you to retrieve Product Keys for Windows, MS Office and over 150 other software products. There is a 30 day free trial.

Q: When is a 3rd party WiFi (Panera, library, hotel) secure?
A: Only when it requires a password to access it.
