When it comes to personal computer security, more is better. Now there’s another tool that you can employ to give yourself an extra security edge – and, it’s free!A favorite entry point of hackers and much computer malware is found in vulnerable software programs that have not been updated with their manufacturer’s latest security-related patch releases.

While Microsoft does a very good job of automatically updating its own branded products, most of us also utilize a lot of third-party software that may fall through the update crack from time to time.

Secunia Software’s Personal Software Inspector (PSI) can be downloaded from www.secunia.com , and it is a good tool to have working for you. A PSI tutorial video can be seen at Secunia’s website.

While it doesn’t take the place of the antivirus or firewall software you are probably already using, PSI adds another layer of protection by periodically scanning for outdated software components and then locating, downloading, and applying any security-related patches that may be available.

PSI works with Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 systems – both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. It examines all software components typed .exe, .dll, and .ocx. It can be configured to operate automatically and to either prompt before applying an update patch or to do automatic updates.

The first time I ran a PSI scan and repair, my own personal security rating rose from a not-so-good 87% all the way to 100%! You may achieve similar results.
