There will be no separate SNUG meeting in December. Instead we will participate in the OLLI Christmas party on December 17, 2010, at 2:00 pm.

Next Friday, the Readers Theatre will perform “Celebration of Winter,” at 11 am. They may also perform at the OLLI holiday party.

Patrick O’Reilly won $26.00 in the 50-50 draw.

Our speaker was Dave Palmer from the University of Florida Extension Service (South Central Extension district.) He talked about internet security and everyone said this was one of the best programs SNUG has ever had. He stressed the importance of strong passwords to protect financial information—a 12 character with numbers and symbols is best. Use a secure browser such as Firefox with security plug-ins or Internet Explorer 8. Watch URLs to know where you are. Do not assume a website is what it claims to be unless you have typed in the URL yourself. If you see the padlock icon, this only ensures that the data is being transferred securely. It doesn’t guarantee that the vendor is trustworthy. He likes making payments through a 3rd party like PayPal or Google Checkout so that fewer vendors will have your credit card number. Be careful of e-mails from people you don’t know, clicking on attachments, and don’t click on links in e-mails. Type the URL into the browser yourself.
